In-Depth review. Is 29 Inch The Same as 700C?

E-bike kit tires

29″ is the same as 700C

A 29-inch wheel is the same as a 700C wheel, but you must consider each wheel’s width to determine compatibility. A 700C tire will fit on a 29-inch rim if there is the same bead seat diameter.

The wheels on a 29-inch bike are usually the same as those on a 700C bike. The “29-inch” designation uses the nominal sizing system, while the “700c” designation uses the French sizing system.

Both wheel types have an ISO system measurement of 622mm and can be swapped out without issue. If your tires are for the proper width, you can safely use either term interchangeably.

The only exception to this rule is if you’re using an old-style rim with less than 16 spokes per side. In that case, your measurements might be slightly off.

When it comes to fitting tires to your rims, there’s a bit of flexibility: while it’s not perfect, you can get away with slightly too big or small tires for your rims.

Although, if you don’t have the right size tire for your wheel, you may experience decreased traction on the road and more risk of getting a flat tire. There is some room to play with sizes, but if it doesn’t look like it will fit well around your rims or something feels off after your first ride, it’s best to get a new one in the correct size.

With that being said, a 700C tire can go onto a 29-inch rim without issue since they are both measurements for diameter.

700c vs 29″ vs 650b

Let’s look at each of these wheel sizes in turn, starting with the French system: 700c and 650b are both French size systems. The “c” and “b” at the end of the number don’t signify anything; they’re only relative to one another. C will be larger than b.

The inside diameter of 700c wheels is 622mm. A thin road bike wheel would have a rim width of 25-35mm, therefore their ISO size would be 28-around 622. The average 650b wheel has an inside diameter of 584 mm and a similar range for the width of the rim. This gives them an ISO size label25-584 . However, 29″wheels use measurements from the nominal system.

  • The inside diameter of 700c wheels is 622mm
  • The average 650b wheel has an inside diameter of 584 mm

If we combine the two tires with a 1.5-inch rim width, their inside diameters will be 622mm and 559 mm, respectively, and their rim widths will be roughly 38 millimeters, giving them an ISO size of 38-622 and 38-559.

If you want to be precise with your tire measurements, consider the wheel’s inside diameter and the rim’s width inside the sidewalls. One measurement like “29” doesn’t give you the complete picture. ISO sizing is more accurate because it uses millimeters instead of inches, so manufacturers have to be more specific with their sizes. Different tire widths can fall under

the general term of “1.5 inches”, but this is just for manufacturer convenience.

Is 29 inches the same as 700C?

Yes! However, make sure the rim widths are the same. The inside diameter of 29 ” (ISO size 622) is the same as that of 700C, but certain 29″ tires will not fit 700C road rims because they are too wide. Make sure to verify the beat seat diameter as well.

Will a 700C tire fit on a 29″ rim?

Yes, an “ISO” (International standards) 28-29/700C wheel will accept a 700c tire or one of similar diameter. This is assuming you have a 700c / 29′′ wheel with the same width.

Buying The Right Size Tires For My Bike?

Locate the ISO sizing for your rims and make sure they match the tires you’re shopping for. You’re seeking for the same inside diameter in both (let’s say, 622 mm). A tire with a bead seat width of 1.5-2x than that measured within the rim’s sidewalls.

Note: The bead seat diameter is the distance between a tire’s lips, which sit on the inside of the rim. To match a 22-622 rim, you’ll need a 44-622 tire. You can deviate slightly from this size for a tighter or looser fit, but not by much.

Quick Rundown

Is 29-inch the same as 700C?

The two terms are, for all practical purposes, interchangeable. The naming difference comes from the sizing systems used in sales. Neither measurement tells you the width of the tire or rim, but you can be sure that the diameter will match whether it’s 700c or 29 inches.

You shouldn’t have any problems utilizing 29-inch tires with 700c rims, and the other way around. Just double-check that the widths are appropriate!

What is the 700C tire?

A 650c tire is designed to fit rims with a diameter of 622mm. The bead seat diameter, which is the measurement on the inside of your tire that comes into contact with the rim, is also very important. On the side of the tire, you will see an ISO size such as 27 (bead seat diameter) -622 (inside diameter).
